In a year-long online mixed media class I took several years ago, one of the projects was making oracle cards. It was completely outside of my wheelhouse - I had never heard of oracle cards. I loved the project, though, and the cards I made stuck with me. I enjoyed revisiting them and quite a few of them eventually made their way into new paintings. Oracle cards mean different things to different people, but I see them as intuitive, uplifting messages to your future self, or visual ideas/messages/thoughts that you like to have around you. Some might even be creative seeds for future paintings. It wasn't anything I had contemplated sharing with other people, as the subject is hardly an area of expertise for me, but then along came 2020. I taught my first Oracle Card workshop at the end of that year and it was such an unexpectedly meaningful experience for all involved that I want to do it again to end 2024.
If you would like to create a series of twelve 6”x8” mixed media cards as messages to your future self or as intuitive seeds for future creative endeavors, or something entirely your interpretation of what they mean to you, I will guide you through the process of constructing them in this workshop. It will be six hours so that there is plenty of room to contemplate and create your cards at your own pace. I will introduce mixed media techniques like printing backgrounds, collage, image transfer, and working with lots of different tools. I will provide lots of imagery, collage papers, the paper pre-measured and ready for you to work on, stencils, unique tools for interesting effects, and I will do demonstrations of various ways for you to build layers and tips on composition, value differences, and color palettes to work with. Students are welcome to bring your own collection of collage papers, imagery, and tools to work with. There is an essential list of supplies to be provided by each student as well. Please see below for the specific list.
Since this is a long workshop, feel free to bring your own lunch and/or snacks, and any non-alcoholic beverages you would like to have with you. Plan on taking a 30 minute break around 12:30. All skill levels welcome, though this will be ideal for someone who has a bit of experience with mixed media and working with acrylic paint and ink. This workshop is about the project of making our collection of Oracle Cards, so lessons will be adhering to this specific project and not general painting and drawing.
