Straight Ahead: Intro to Stop-Motion 

Objects come to life in stop-motion one frame at a time, in a mode of animation known as straight-ahead. To build a performance, each frame is destroyed to create the next. This hands-on workshop is a primer in the production skills and principles of stop-motion animation. Students will learn to craft paper cut-out puppets, collaborate on an exquisite corpse and be introduced to a selection of techniques to create their own stop-motion animated films. 

About the Instructor

Charlotte Hong Bee Her is a filmmaker and animation artist from Singapore interested in doing everything for what does not exist. Recent credits include animation director on “By Water”, a selection of Sundance 2023 and winner of the 2023 SFFilm Golden Gate Award for "Best Animated Short". They are currently in post-production on their debut feature film "Tropical Rain, Death-Scented Kiss", a co-production of Total Blur Productions, Momo Film Co, and Daluyong Studios. 

Required Materials

Please download the Stop Motion Studio app on your device prior to the first class.

Drawing supplies: Pens, pencils, markers, color pencils etc

Scissors or utility knife

Sketchbook

Bring a smartphone tripod or stand if you own one
